Step 19 to Buying a Home: Register your utilities
If you haven’t done so, make a list of all the utilities that you need to sign up for in order to ensure that you have utilities running when you moved in. If this is a new experience to you, the process is easy. Google the utility provider in your area (this is the city where your new house is located). Utility providers keep changing names so you want to make sure you have the latest ones. If you hire as as your Realtors, then we will send you this information and you just need to either call or sign up online. For example, in Toronto, the hydro provider is Toronto Hydro and you will look for Start, Stop, Move Account Link. In Durham Region, the hydro provider is Elexicon Energy. Here’s the utility providers for Toronto and the Greater Toronto Area.
If you’re currently paying your own hydro and other utilities, then it is easier to call and tell them when you need the service at the new house and give the new address. You will also tell them when you are moving out of your apartment or current home. Sometimes, you need to do a service overlap for a few weeks or month. We will explain this to you when it’s time. If you are moving from another city to Toronto or other parts of the Greater Toronto Area, be sure to check who are the right providers and you need to create a new account. If this is your first time registering for utilities, they might ask for a deposit which you can get back in a year or two.
